Mowanjum Mums
Creativity & Wellbeing Project
The Mowanjum Young Mums Creative Wellbeing Project is a First Block Sounds program supporting young mothers and their little ones in the Mowanjum Community and Derby surrounds.
The program creates a safe, welcoming space for young mums to connect with other young women, spend time with their babies, explore creativity and support their social and emotional wellbeing. Across 32 workshops, participants will take part in creative activities including jewellery making, painting, writing, music, cooking and creative play, alongside wellbeing activities such as mindfulness, meditation, free writing, free painting, fishing and time out bush.
A key focus of the program is supporting the connection between young mothers and their babies. Through music, sensory activities, creative play and shared experiences, mums will explore simple ways to engage with their children while supporting their babies’ social, emotional and cognitive development.
The program is delivered by Jada Koh and Shontae Charles. Shontae provides ongoing local support and connection for participants, bringing her lived experience and strong relationships within the community to the program.
The project is supported by Mowanjum Community and Ngunga Group Women’s Aboriginal Corporation, helping create accessible opportunities for young mothers to connect, create, build confidence and feel supported within their community.
